About Us

Discover Husky Formula Racing Team

Husky Formula Racing (HFR) is St. Cloud State University’s Formula SAE team-an interdisciplinary group of students who design, build, and race a small, open-wheel, formula-style car each year. We turn classroom theory into real-world engineering by owning the entire lifecycle: research, design, simulation, manufacturing, testing, and competition.

Husky Formula Racing is a student-led initiative at St. Cloud State University focused on competitive formula racing.

Our team offers students the unique opportunity to engage in hands-on design and fabrication of racecars. What We Build

We compete in the Formula SAE combustion class with a motorcycle-derived powertrain (Honda CBR600RR), a lightweight steel-tube chassis, and student-designed systems for suspension, aero, electronics, data acquisition, and driver controls. Every component reflects our core priorities: performance, manufacturability, serviceability, and safety.

Where We Compete

We target Formula SAE Michigan each year and attend when registration, readiness, and resources align. Our goal is to represent SCSU on the national stage annually-bringing a safe, competitive car that passes tech and performs across all static and dynamic events.

Safety & Values

We build safely or we don’t build at all. HFR follows FSAE rules and best practices for shop procedures, driver safety, and vehicle validation. We value curiosity, integrity, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

How We Work:

HFR is organized into collaborative subteams that mirror a modern engineering organization:

Chassis & Vehicle Dynamics – frame design, suspension kinematics, brakes, steering, ergonomics
Powertrain – engine integration, intake/exhaust, cooling, fuel, drivetrain
Electrical & Data – wiring, sensors, ECU, data logging, instrumentation
Aero & Composites – wings, undertray, bodywork, layups, CFD-informed concepts
Manufacturing & Test – jigs, fixtures, machining, welding, inspection, track testing
Business & Operations – budgeting, purchasing, logistics, outreach, sponsorships, media

Who can join Husky Formula Racing?

Husky Formula Racing welcomes all students from St. Cloud State University and SCTCC, regardless of their major. We encourage anyone with an interest in motorsport and engineering to join our team and contribute their skills.

What skills can I gain?

Members will acquire practical skills in design, fabrication, teamwork, and problem-solving. You’ll work on real engineering projects, enhancing your resume and preparing you for future career opportunities within the automotive and engineering fields.

When and where do meetings take place?

Our meetings are held every Tuesday and Thursday at 5 P.M. in ISELF 225. We invite new members to attend and learn more about our projects, upcoming events, and how they can get involved in the exciting world of motorsport.
